Taking the outside track
Article Abstract:
Noble Grossart Dir Graham Watson and Exec Mark Walker broke off from their employer to pursue a career in sports management. With thebacking of David Murray's Murray International Holdings Ltd, the two were able to put the sports management company called The Carnegie Partnership. On the individual management aspect of its operation, the partnership aims to sign promising athletes before rival IMG does. Marketing-wise, Carnegie hopes to eventually run a major sporting event. However, the firm has been most successful on the project-advice and funding side of its business. Right after setting up shop, it was already involved in a Murrayfield debenture issue project worth 39 million pounds sterling for the Scottish Rugby Union. The combination of sport and entrepreneuralism involved in their new line of work makes the financial skills and experience that Watson and Walker gained from their previous jobs highly applicable and useful in the success of their company.

Short cut to tying up loose NEDs
Article Abstract:
The Cadbury report on corporate governance has sparked discussions on the role of non-executive directors (NEDs) and how they may be recruited. NEDs generally do not have specific tasks. Rather, they are often expected to accomplish a variety of functions, including providing strategic advice, networking external contacts for the benefit of the company, and participating audit and remuneration committees. A recent survey showed that most company chairmen expected NEDs to become actively involved in the running of the business, although more than half of them recruited NEDs without giving them job descriptions. As to the matter of recruiting NEDs, PA Consulting's Recruitment Dir Douglas Kinnaird believes that there is an ample supply of these directors to meet the demand for them. It is just a matter of realizing that there is a market for NEDs.

Prestwick take-off
Article Abstract:
A radical change in corporate culture has led to the dramatic financial recovery of the Scotland-based Prestwick Holdings PLC. Among the changes introduced were stringent cost-reduction measures, the flattening of the organizational structure, higher business standards, and more aggressive and focused marketing efforts. Prestwick's 109,000 pounds sterling year-end profits for 1991 may not be very impressive, but it gives testimony to the electronic firm's triumph over recession and oversupply. Credit for Prestwick's successful recovery goes largely to its new CEO, Wayne Osman.
