Tax software programs come down in price and reflect expansion of electronic filing
Article Abstract:
A survey of 91 companies on tax return preparation software indicates that prices on tax software are reasonable and that new technology, technique, and ideas will make 1989 a profitable year for accountants. Firms purchasing tax preparation software should chose a package that fits their tax preparation process without making large changes to the preparation cycle. Firms will need a computer, software, and data entry personnel. When choosing software, firms should consider the user-friendliness of menu functions and data entry, system support, the number of forms offered, and printing. In states with state income taxes, firms need software that integrates the state module with the federal income tax schedule. The computer used to run the software should be either a 80286 or 80386 IBM compatible with, at a minimum, 640K RAM and a 20MB hard drive.

Changes in in-house software reflect electronic filing and TRA '86
Article Abstract:
A directory is presented of 85 software companies that offer corporate, Subchapter S, or partnership tax return preparation software. Company addresses and telephone numbers, types of returns and form numbers prepared, package names, numbers of users, and prices are among the information included. All 76 vendors offering laser print options support the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer or printers with HP emulation. Tax preparation software from 48 of these vendors is compatible with networks, and electronic filing is supported by 36 of these vendors. As more taxpayers seek professional help with returns, preparers increasingly turn to the growing number of tax preparation software products available.
