The Lucent Technologies Inc Omaha Works plant has used synchronized team thinking as a business strategy successfully. Despite the complexities related in adopting this strategy, Lucent has employed a team-based approach that uses the basics of the problem-solving process. The methodology is initiated by defining the problem based on the facts provided by numbers, pictures and experiences. Then the team determines the root cause of the problem, develops an action plan and countermeasures, and evaluates the whole process.

Short-cycle kaizen (SCK) or continuous improvement process is one of the approaches in organizational management and improvement. SCK is based on systematic methodologies and technologies that lead to rapid changes that improvement appears to be continuous. A kaizen programs follows 3 basic phases, namely, planning, implementation and performance evaluation. Commitment to SCK means adopting the process improvement principles embraced by SCK, which is variance reduction and waste elimination.
