Tempting fruit in Silicon Valley
Article Abstract:
IBM has bid for Lotus Development in a move which is part of a wider trend toward consolidation in the software industry. US technology companies have become cash rich due to the US economic recovery. There are rumors over bids for other companies such as Apple Computer, while Novell is cited as a possible target and as a possible bidder. IBM is bidding $3.3 billion for Lotus, and this is the first hostile bid in the sector, due to a perception that human capital is important in the software industry.

British business in the slow lane for Europe
Article Abstract:
UK companies are moving more slowly than those in mainland Europe to prepare for planned European monetary union (Emu). Banks will be especially affected and they tend to be relatively well prepared. Only some 20% of UK companies have calculated how much the change will cost them. The British Retail Consortium estimates that the cost to the sector will be between 3 billion pounds sterling and 3.5 billion pounds. The total cost to UK companies could be some 20 billion pounds.
