Food sector fights slump with value
Article Abstract:
As predictions of a slowdown in the economy mount, UK supermarket chains are widening their ranges of economy own brand products. Tesco is expanding its Value range by 3% to total 620 products. Asda is to increase its Farm Stores range to about 350 products. Sainsbury and Safeway have said that they are not going to extend their ranges but confirmed the importance of them to the stores' strategies. Analysts have said that it was advisable for chains to plan for the slowdown but that traditionally food was one of the last sectors to be affected.
