The EMS Conundrum
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom has remained outside the European Monetary System (EMS) since its inception in 1978. Britain drew back from full membership by refusing to join the Exchange Rate Mechanism by which exchange rates of European currencies are aligned. This has been criticized as Britain takes place in nearly all other aspects. The basic reason is that sterling is especially vulnerable to fluctuations in the dollar price of oil. After examining evidence which pointed out that fact that Britain could decide the entry rate of sterling, it may be advantageous to become a full member of EMS soon.
