The dizzy heights
Article Abstract:
There are many books about leadership targeted at managers interested in developing their skills, but there is a lack of consensus on what constitutes a leader. US author Warren Bennis states that there are over 400 definitions of leadership. In his book, On Becoming a Leader, Bennis identifies the basic elements of leadership: passion, trust, curiosity, daring, integrity, and a guiding vision. Leadership author John Adair, in his many books, including Action Centred Leadership and Developing Leaders, postulates that effective leaders focus on goals to be met, create and support a team needed to achieve the goals, and motivate and teach the members of the team to maximize their contributions. Charles Handy, in his book The Age of Unreason, believes that leaders are a combination of consultant, teacher, and trouble-shooter that require technical, human, and conceptual skills.

Fred Gray: making the most of money
Article Abstract:
The opinions and views of ICI Corporate Treasurer Fred Gray on the subject of the financial management of multinational corporations are presented. ICI has many foreign business concerns, and Gray states that operating in South America requires a different financial management approach than operating in the US, Canada, and Europe. ICI has operations in Brazil and Argentina, which means the company must factor political uncertainty and hyperinflation into its financial management strategies. International operations have become central to many firms, and foreign operations increase the level of complexity in corporate management, which necessitates the employing of specialists, including lawyers, negotiators, and financiers.

1992 Europe sans frontieres
Article Abstract:
A national campaign to encourage British interest in the formation of the Single European Market by 1992 is gaining momentum. The UK business and financial communities are beginning to think and act as full partners in the European Community (EC) and are becoming aware of potential opportunities. Existing apathy, doubt, and unconcern reflect scepticism about EC goals in general and an insular and cultural bias rather than a continental, European attitude. A contrasting situation is found elsewhere in the EC, especially in West Germany, Italy, and France; where strategic planning is well underway to meet the 1992 deadline
