The economic efficiency of corporate culture
Article Abstract:
A corporation's 'culture' is a set of broad, tacitly understood rules which tell employees how to behave under a variety of circumstances. Many theories about corporate culture are derived from anthropological thought, but anthropological interpretations often miss the point that corporations must value profits. Cultural rules have an economic efficiency: they allow firms to effectively administer contracts with employees. Because employees and firms can not anticipate all of the contingencies in their contract, broad cultural rules created by the firm provide an adequate substitute for deciding appropriate courses of action in unanticipated situations.
