The engineering firm ZVU saw a profit in 2000
Article Abstract:
ZVU (Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic), engineering firm, saw a profit of CEK 1 mil in 2000 compared to a loss of CEK 139 mil in 1999. The company generated a cumulative loss of over CEK 1 bil for 1995-1998. It covered its losses for the past few years by a stock decrease and the use of its capital fund. Its stock decreased from CEK 971.78 mil to CEK 9.8 mil. ZVU's proceeds totalled CEK 81 mil in 2000 compared to CEK 213 mil in 1999. The firm ended its power production during 1H 2000 and transferred its engineering and supplier activities to the subsidiary ZVU Engineering (Czech Republic) in Jan 2001. ZVU's judicial settlement, which was started in 1997, was successfully completed in 1999. Within the settlement, the firm transferred its manufacturing to four subsidiaries cleared of debts. They were ZVU Potez (Czech Republic), ZVU Servis (Czech Republic), ZVU Slevarna a strojirna (Czech Republic) and ZVU Chemie (Czech Republic), which was sold by ZVU to Boehler Hochdrucktechnik (Austria). ZVU decreased its outer sources by CEK 1.6 bil to CEK 145 mil at the end of 2000. Its debts towards banks decreased from CEK 641 mil to CEK 36 mil. In 2000 ZVU had 61 employees on average. ZVU's main shareholder is Finop Holding with a 71% stake.

Chodos (Chodov, Czech Republic), engineering firm, had to face sale problems in 2000. Reasons were the troubles of Bridgestone/Firestone (US) with the quality of its tyres. Chodos, which is the largest domestic manufacturer of hydraulic and mechanical vulcanizing presses, is an important supplier of technology for the European branches of the concern Bridgestone (Japan). Chodos considerably decreased its proceeds in 2000 compared to 1999. It expects an unspecified loss for 2000 compared to a profit of CEK 20 mil in 1999.
