The need for research at newspapers
Article Abstract:
Market research may eventually turn around the decline in newspaper circulation, which has gone down from the average daily readership of 80% in the 1970s to 60% by the start of the 21st century. Newspapers, just like the other major industries, should be committed in discovering their customers' preferences, their reading interests and how much they are willing to pay for subscriptions and single copies. For instance, the News&Observer conducts a survey among its various departments every two years. Department heads then attend a management summary over the survey's findings which is presented by research firm Belden Assoc.
