The performance consequences of subfield entry
Article Abstract:
Technical subfields are markets that are created after an important technological breakthrough is achieved in a particular industry. It is crucial to determine the most appropriate response to the emergence of subfields since they promise a unique opportunity to achieve a sustainable competitive edge in an otherwise mature industry. A study is conducted to examine the performance effects of entry into a subfield, and how these are impacted by other components of technical subfield dynamics. The study focuses on the early phase of the evolution of the automatic teller machine subfield over the period 1971-1979. Findings suggest that first-mover advantages exist in technical subfields, that a company's strengths and capabilities must mesh with the subfield's evolutional phase, and that appropriate entry strategies may be significantly affected by the imitability of the subfield.
