The sourcer's apprenticeship
Article Abstract:
Strategic sourcing is an offshoot of outsourcing. Unlike outsourcing, which involves letting another company perform only one function, the concept of strategic sourcing involves choosing the right strategic partner that will do most of the company's processes, except for the core functions of the company that make it unique. Aside from avoiding the risks inherent in fragmented outsourcing jobs, the holistic strategic sourcing approach allows a company to gain from a pool of knowledge. Companies interested in strategic sourcing should first identify their basic strengths and choose the right strategic partner. This partner should demonstrate world-class expertise, competitive edge and ability to evolve with clients and deal with business problems. Strategic contracts should be as long as 10 years because competitive advantage cannot be achieved in a few years only. Management support is also crucial.
