Erect leaves caused by brassinosteroid deficiency increase biomass production and grain yield in rice
Article Abstract:
Study is presented to show that the erect leaf phenotype of a rice brassinosteroid-deficient mutant, osdwarf4-1, is associated with enhanced grain yields under conditions of dense planting, even without extra fertilizer. Results suggest that regulated genetic modulation of brassinosteroid biosynthesis can improve crops without the negative environmental effects of fertilizer.

The use of cysteine proteinase inhibitors to engineer resistance against potyviruses in transgenic tobacco plants
Article Abstract:
Researchers placed rice cysteine proteinase inhibitor gene into tobacco plants to show that plant cystatins can effectively prevent replication of potyviruses and possibly against other viruses that require cysteine proteinase for replication. Charts, tables, and a photograph are included.
