The use of the Circadian Type Inventory as a measure of the circadian constructs of vigour and rigidity
Article Abstract:
A psychometric evaluation of the Circadian Type Inventory (CTI) is undertaken. The internal reliability co-efficients show that the CTI Vigor scale has greater statistical homogeneity than the Rigidity scale. To sum up the psychometric evaluation, the CTI does not achieve a close mapping of circadian rhythm characteristics onto questionnaire scales. Therefore, the CTI is inappropriate for use in measuring circadian rhythm characteristics in orderto predict tolerance to shiftwork.

An experimental change of the speed of rotation of the morning and evening shift
Article Abstract:
The effects of a change in continuous shift schedule are studied in Dutch railway traffic controllers. Theexperimental schedule has a moderately rapidly rotating morning and evening shift, but a slowly rotating night shift. Six months after the change show a decrease in sleep complaints and weekly workload. Generally, the workers feel that the positive effects of the more rapid rotation outweigh the negative effects, therefore they prefer the experimental schedule.

Computer-aided design of shift schedules
Article Abstract:
A computer program that generates demand-oriented shift system designs for continuous systems is presented. Taking into account the physiological and psychological well-being of the workers and the organizational demands, the computer program is able to design optimal shift systems. Results show that the quality of the solutions depends on the choice of criteria, and different criteria are found to be interdependent.
