Predators circle cheap tour operators
Article Abstract:
Foreign predators have shown interest in British tour operators, such as Thomson Travel, after they have seen their stock prices fall. Tour operators have been affected by a number of trends such as booking holidays through the internet, cheap hotels and flights, and the removal of risks from currency exposure. A number of suitors may be unable to acquire major British tour operators for competition reasons, so, despite the apparent cheapness of stocks, the sector may not undergo a re-rating over the short-term.

Too many holidays mean a dark summer for UK tour operators
Article Abstract:
Airtours faces problems in the United Kingdom market for tour operators with possible overcapacity that could result in large discounts in late summer 1999. Stock prices in the sector have dropped. Thomson Travel has given a profit warning and there operators could be affected if a large number of cheap holidays are released by Thomson. Airtours and Thomson have both had profit forecasts downgraded, with Thomson more affected. Meanwhile, the European Competition Commission is carrying out an investigation into a lapsed takeover by Airtours of First Choice, and a new bid could be accepted in the context of the problems in the industry.
