The mutual fund management companies sector in Thailand gas seen its assets under management decline by 30% from 217 billion baht at the end of 1996 to 167.5 billion baht at the end of Jun 1997. Some of the Thai mutual fund management companies have gone out of business as they have fallen below the 50 million baht threshold. Despite the decline in assets, more mutual fund management companies are going into business in Thailand.

The Philippines' Congress voted to allow the country's Social Security System (SSS), the pension fund for private-sector workers, to make offshore investments. SS Assistant VP-Investments Virginia Flor believes it is a positive move as the SSS has failed to meet its projected minimum return of 12% due to the economic troubles that are widespread across Asia that have adversely affected the Philippines' stock market.
