UK: SOMERFIELD STORE SALES COULD BE INVESTIGATED
Article Abstract:
The sale of 140 Somerfield supermarkets is likely to come under close scrutiny by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The stores have been valued in the region of GB[pound] 500mn and any sale where potential buyers acquire assets of more than GB[pound] 70mn has to be investigated. Each of the large supermarket chains has expressed interest and OFT rules mean that no one group is permitted to have more than a 25% market share. Tesco, Safeway and Sainsbury's are all thought to be major contenders for the stores.
