UK equities: not so strange
Article Abstract:
UK share prices in retail companies could be expected to rise since consumption looks set to rise from Oct 1996. Instead, engineering firms have seen share price rises since Aug 1996. Capital investment looks set to grow faster than consumption which is likely to be affected by interest rate rises and could also be hit by tax rises. The minimum wage could also affect companies involved in consumer goods, if it is implemented by a Labor government, which would also seek to promote investment. A rise in taxes and the valueof pound sterling would hit all share prices.

Europe's sick man begins to recover
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock prices are cheaper than those elsewhere in Europe so could have further to rise, especially if the UK joins European monetary union (Emu). This could lead to a drop in yields for government securities as they converge to European levels. The UK may not see a strong performance in stocks, however, since UK stocks have not performed well at the peak of previous economic cycles from 1972 to 1974 and 1987 to 1990. The UK has less spare capacity than other European countries which means that inflation and interest rates could rise.
