USWeb launches first network of developers: $10 million brand campaign seen as key

USWeb aims to provide franchises with economies of scale and means to reduce costs and improve quality. It launched a $10-million advertising campaign to establish its name worldwide. USWeb now has 30 franchises in 22 states offering a wide range of skills including graphic skills, Java programming and electronic commerce skills. However, detractors claim that the firm will fail to find a niche because there is more demand than talent in the market.

A 12-hour power outage on Oct. 10, 1996 in Palo Alto, CA, disrupted online services of BBN, a large Internet service provider. NetCom Online Communication Services suffered a 13-hour blackout in Jun. 1996, while America Online threw 6 million users offline after it was downed by a 19-hour power blackout.
