A profile of Una Ryan, the President and CEO of AVANT Immunotherapeutics and a recipient of the British Empire for contributions to biotech, is presented. Ryan believes that that business barriers need to be eliminated for biotech to accomplish its real mission, which is to save lives, and young companies must be protected from lawsuits to ensure that they do not get slaughtering during clinical trials.

The results from a nationwide compensation packages offered by life science sector are presented. The researchers from the Harvard Business School has created the annual Compensation and Entrepreneurship Report in Life Sciences that has proved to be a useful resource for boards, venture investors, CEOs compensation committees and human resource professionals at life science companies.

Alexis Borisy, chief executive officer (CEO) of the biotech firm CombinatoRx in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is taking an unconventional approach to drug development by combining approved drugs in the hope of finding new drugs. CombinatoRx is using genomic data to find receptors that interact with already approved drugs, whereas other companies screen drugs to match a given receptor.
