Unilever moves manufacturing to Bohemia
Article Abstract:
Unilever CR (Prague, Czech Republic), food and chemists' products company, will raise soap production at its Nelahozeves plant to 30,000 t per year. The growth will be a result of the moving of soap manufacturing from the UK to Nelahozeves, Czech Republic. The company will expend CEK 300 mil on the moving, CEK 200 mil of which will go to capital investment including the purchase of machinery and other equipmet. The moving will be finished in the late summer of 2001. Soap exports from the Czech Republic will increase by CEK 0.5 bil per year. In 2001 Czech soap exports will generate only about CEK 200 mil. Unilever also plans to enlarge its plant in Zabreh-nad-Morave, Czech Republic. The plant was incorporated in the group after Unilever took over Bestfoods (US) for USD 25 bil in 2000. Bestfoods produces mayonnaises and soups under the trade marks Hellmanns and Knorr in Zabreh. Unilever would like to double this production. In 2001 Unilever CR plans to restart profit growth in all categories, including Algida. Algida controls about a third of the Czech ice-cream market but is unprofitable in spite of the fact.
