Where have all the antibiotic patents gone?
Article Abstract:
The reasons for less antibiotic research and development (R&D) and lesser patent applications being filed for antibiotics are examined. The reasons have included higher R&D costs associated with developing new antibiotics, the difficulties in improving the efficacy and safety of new antibiotics and difficulties in discovering new drugs effective against multiple strains of bacteria.

Fishing for cancer models
Article Abstract:
The molecular conservation between human and zebrafish liver tumors is evaluated using comparative functional genomics. The significant similarities between fish and man are identified in the expression profiles of orthologous genes according to histopathologic tumor grade, thus strengthening the rationale for using zebrafish as a cancer model system.
