Will IT help the medicine go down?
Article Abstract:
Reforms implemented to improve health care delivery in the UK have compelled the National Health Service (NHS) to look for information technology (IT) that could support them. The NHS and Community Care Act of 1990 mandated the separation between purchaser and provider so that buyers of health services, such as general practitioners (GPs), would be able to enter into contracts with hospitals and other service providers. Under this new system, the responsibility of district and regional hospital authorities was greatly reduced since it was transferred to individual hospital trusts and GPs. Several NHS trusts have tried to install information management systems that could meet their information requirements, but most of them have failed. The NHS's best hope for successfully integrating all its IT systems comes in the form of the NHS MEssage Handling Service. This initiative is designed to serve as an information superhighway that would link NHS sites nationwide.

Solar systems
Article Abstract:
The UK is lagging behind other European countries in the use of solar power. Efforts to harness energy released by the sun are intensifying in the region given its numerous advantages. Solar energy is more environment-friendly than fossil-fuelled power stations that produce pollutants. In addition, it does not pose any of health and safety risks linked to nuclear fuel. While there is serious commitment to solar power in many parts of Continental Europe, particularly in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands, use of this resource has been quite limited in the UK. Only a handful of British homes and a single commercial building rely on solar energy. Solar power is not very popular in the UK because electric and nuclear power are cheaper, while the costs of materials needed to harness sunlight are high.
