Nanoparticle adsorption on a weak polyelectrolyte. Stiffness, pH, charge mobility, and ionic concentration effects investigated by Monte Carlo simulations
Article Abstract:
The formation of complexes between a polyelectrolyte (PE) and oppositely charged nanoparticles (NPs) are investigated when electrostatic interactions are considered. Results reveal that the key to the qualitative understanding of the zoology of PE/NP complexes is the balance between attractive PE/NP interactions and monomer/monomer and nanoparticle/nanoparticle repulsions, both controlled by adjusting bulk properties such as pH and ionic concentration.

The influence of secondary interactions during the formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers: Layer thickness, bound water and layer interpenetration
Article Abstract:
X-ray and neutron reflectivity are used for studying the structure and composition of polyelectrolyte multilayers from poly(allyl amine) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS). The strong temperature dependence and the loss of bound water molecules are attributed to the hydrophobic force, but an isotope effect is found as the loss of bound water is less pronounced in the deuterated layers.
