Enhanced sensitivity in single-reflection spectroscopy of organic monolayers on metal substrates (Pseudo-ATR)
Article Abstract:
Intensity of an infrared spectrum of a thin film or monolayer on a metal substrate can be increased an order of magnitude by using attenuated total reflection (ATR) instrumentation with a single reflection (pseudo-ATR). The results reveal that pseudo-ATR is a highly sensitive technique for analyzing monolayers and very thin films on metal substrates and yields higher signal-to-noise ratios for IR peaks than ordinary grazing angle specular reflectance.

Vibronic spectroscopy of single C(sub 60) molecules and monolayers with the STM
Article Abstract:
A scanning tunneling microscope is used to study the differential conductance (dI/dV) of single C(sub 60) molecules in isolation and in monolayers adsorbed on NiAl(110) and on ultrathin alumina film grown on the Ni-Al-(110) surface. On the oxide layer, the electronic bands in the dI/dV spectra display a series features, attributed to the vibronic states of the molecules, which are absent when the molecules are adsorbed on the metal.

Inter- and intramolecular temperature-dependent vibrational perturbations of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers
Article Abstract:
The spectral positions and intensities of the h33-C16 components of the self-assembled monolayers (SAM) are shown to provide evidence of inter- and intramolecular couplings. It is suggested that the highly constrained geometry of the isotropically diluted monolayers may provide an environment that is less sensitive to intramolecular couplings with low-frequency modes than that of urea-clathrate-isolated species.
