CHINA: POLYCARBONATE INVESTMENT BY BAYER
Article Abstract:
German Bayer AG of Leverkusen is planning to set up a fully integrated chemicals complex in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Caojing, China. Together with Shanghai Chloralkali Co, Bayer is to build a polycarbonate production plant there. The first phase by 2003 involves production capacity of 50,000 tpy, which is to be doubled by 2005. The investment worth a total of EUR 470mn, to which Bayer will contribute 90%, will serve mainly the automotive and CD/DVD industries. Bayer is to raise its worldwide production capacity for Makrolon polycarbonate to 700,000 tpy by 2002 from 500,000 tpy in 1998. Longer-term plans for the Caojing project involve the production of polyurethane raw materials, basic chemical products, synthetic rubber and paint raw materials.

GERMANY: DSM, TER HELL PLASTIC COOPERATION

German DSM Deutschland GmbH of Dusseldorf and Ter Hell Plastic GmbH of Herne intensify their cooperation in the field of engineering plastics. In future, DSM is to conduct 20% of its engineering plastics business with Ter Hell Plastic. Also, DSM is to use parts of Ter Hell Plastic's compounding capacities. In the ongoing business year 1998, Ter Hell Plastic expects a turnover of DM 88mn. Production is to rise by 5% to 40,000 tons per year. DSM Engineering Plastics generates an annual turnover in excess of DM 700mn.
