Study of the kinetics of the pancake-to-brush transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains
Article Abstract:
The chemical grafting of thiol-terminated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (HS-PNIPAM) chains to a gold surface from a solution was investigated by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) in real time. The frequency and energy dissipation response revealed that the short HS-PNIPAM chain exhibit three-regime kinetics of the grafting, in regime I and II the HS-PNIPAM chains form pancake and mushroom structure and regime III chains forms brushes.

Collapse and swelling of thermally sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) brushes monitored with a quartz crystal microbalance
Article Abstract:
The temperature dependence of collapse and swelling of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes grafted on SiO(sub 2) surface in water with a quartz crystal microbalance. The results revealed that there exists a hysteresis in the swelling of the collapsed chains, which is attributed to the intrachain and interchain interactions formed in the collapsed state at higher temperatures and the nonuniformity of the brushes.

Conformational changes of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains at air/water interface: Effects of temperature, compression rate, and packing density
Article Abstract:
The effects of temperature, compression rate, and packing density on conformational properties of polystyrene-block-poly(N-isopropylacryamide) (PS-b-PNIPAM) diblock copolymer monolayers at the air/water interface is investigated. The results have shown that the stimuli-responsive properties of PNIPAM chains at the interface can be manipulated by adjusting the conformations of PNIPAM chains.
