On the nature of the smectic A-to-nematic phase transition of 8CB
Article Abstract:
Density as a function of temperature is measured in the smectic A and nematic phases in the immediate vicinity of the smectic A-to-nematic transition temperature [T(sub AN')] of p'-n-octyl-p'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB0. The very small volume change obtained at the smectic A-to-nematic (A-N') phase transition of 'pure' 8CB confirms that it is weakly first-order.

Calamatic liquid crystals as nanoscale analogues of a block copolymer
Article Abstract:
The micro-segregation picture of a block copolymer was applied to a low molecular weight liquid crystal (LC) to clarify the similarities between them with respect to structures mesophase formation. It was found that there exists a good correspondence in the chi versus f phase diagram between block copolymers and block LCs.
