UV-vis spectroscopy of iodine adsorbed on alkali-metal-modified zeolite catalysts for addition of carbon dioxide to ethylene oxide
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the basicity of alkali-metal-exchanged (Na, K, Cs) zeolites X and Y using UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy of adsorbed iodine. The incorporation of the occluded cesium oxide species in the ion-exchanged zeolites through decomposition of impregnated cesium acetate further promothed their catalytic ability. Water adsorbed in zeolite pores was observed to have an important role in ethylene carbonate formation.

A density functional study of the acetoxylation of ethylene to vinyl acetate catalyzed by palladium acetate
Article Abstract:
Density functional theory computational methods were used in studying a Wacker-like mechanism. The palladium acetate dimer has been modeled by two clusters of two palladium ions coordinated by acetate ligands. A single palladium ion, which was part of the dimer, formed the active site. Formation of a vacancy at a terminal acetate site is inhibited at high acetate concentration, which resulted in a negative reaction order with respect to acetate.

Acidity of Keggin-type heteropolycompounds evaluated by catalytic probe reactions, sorption microcalorimetry, and density functional quantum chemical calculations
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the acidity of Keggin-type heteropolycompounds and its influence on reactivity using microcalorimetry of ammonia sorption, catalytic probe reactions and density functional quantum chemical calculations. For model compounds, phosphomolybdic, phophotungstic, silicotungstic and silicomolybdic acids were employed. Results provide a consistent ranking of acid strength for the class of solid catalysts.
