pH-gated permeability of variably charged species through polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes
Article Abstract:
The facile, reversible control of flux through polyelectrolyte 'multilayers' (PEMUs) has significant implications for membrane transport, and drug loading and release in particular. The effectiveness of this strategy, using L-ascorbic acid and 3-3(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-L-alanine (L-DOPA) as electrochemically active membrane transport probes with ionizable functional groups. The strategy of using pH changes to modify the charge of a molecule, and thereby influence permeability, is generally applicable to small and large molecules.

Interaction between polyelectrolyte and oppositely charged surfactant: Effect of charge density
Article Abstract:
The binding of dodecyltrimethylammonium (DoTab) to poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) at different degrees of neutralization was studied using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and laser light scattering (LLS) techniques. The surfactant binds to the ploymer at all different degrees of neutralization, however the mechanism varies.

pH-controlled swelling polyelectrolyte multilayer microcapsules
Article Abstract:
The effect of pH on the osmotically induced swelling of polyelectrolyte multilayer microcapsuled filled with solutions of a strong polyanion is explored quantitatively. The results indicate the softening of the multilayer shells, which is likely due to a decrease in charge density of polycations.
