A New Approach To The Development of Senior Managers

Article Abstract:

The Management Centre of Buckingham, England has established a new series of MBA programs for established business managers. These new programs are designed to avoid the differences found between classroom theory and the practical aspects of ordinary business operations. The centre does this by establishing classes made up of twelve to fifteen managers from widely differing business backgrounds. The classes are assigned common case problems and each team tries to solve them with their own techniques. They must use talents of their own team members plus drawing upon the talents of the center's own professional staff in working out their case study. An integral part of the program that is quite unique is that for a period of between twelve and eighteen months, the teams will comprise one third of a group in which a sponsoring organization and the faculty will form the other parts as they work on assigned practical problems. It is hoped that the MBA manager students can learn about other aspects of business management from a practical viewpoint and use them in their business careers.

The Malaysian government is working hard to manage its resources to meet its new objectives. The country is trying to build an identity for itself as an industrial nation. Although its economic situation is getting better, its management quality is poor. The country has set a Look East policy to practice what it sees Japan doing in industry and management. Education and training of management in Malaysia is in need ofreview and enhancements. Currently, this education is done in a classroom environment. It must be done on-the-job to give practical experience and improve management quality.

British companies spend huge sums of money to organize and attend professional conferences. Yet, few companies take the time to understand the cost benefit relationship of a conference. Within each company, there are many different types of conferences. However, conferences should be organized in such a way that the purpose is clear and the goals are purposeful. Where to have the conference is also important. Participants expect something to come from the conference to motivate them until the following year.
