A Quality Circle Case Study
Article Abstract:
Mullard Limited, an English manufacturing concern, is pioneering the introduction of quality circles in Great Britain. So far the results have been very positive and have resulted in helping the company increase productivity, product quality, and employee morale. There has been some resistance from the unions and from certain management personnel but the program has grown to include over 200 people operating within thirty eight circles. There are five types of quality circles at Mullard Ltd. based on solving individual problems and usually comprised of members within one department or from different departments facing a common problem. Unfortunately there is a thirty-nine per cent annual attrition rate among its members which is considered average for this type of program in Great Britain and even in Japan.

Product Quality Assessment by Consumers - the Role of Product Information
Article Abstract:
Quality assessment of a product by a consumer is based on one's experience with the product. Workmanship, material quality, functional quality, and economical quality can only be determined so far during testing and production control. Famous brand names usually give a consumer confidence in the quality of a product. Advertising, independent product testing, and personal product acquaintance are the best sources of product knowledge. Informative labelling is one criterion that the consumer more and more relies and insists on. Finally, certification of quality seals ensures a better product for purchase. Tables are included to illustrate comparison studies.

The Management of Quality: A Top Management View
Article Abstract:
Quality in products and services is so important that it should not be left to line managers. Chief executives should have a direct hand in the issues of quality. A national quality campaign was launched in the United Kingdom in 1983. Reports from seven chief executives on quality are presented. The industries represented are a cross section of British corporations. Each company provides insights into how it will solve and continue to monitor quality at its facilities.
