Automation Outlook: Establishing Electronic Communications Requires Full-time Attention by a Patient, Persistent Person
Article Abstract:
Setting up a system with communications links can be a frustrating experience due to malfunctioning parts, time spent learning to use the software, and converting machines to make them compatible. The process is becoming easier because manufacturers' representatives are better informed and more willing to share their know-how, and more machines are being made that can be tailored to use other machines' codes. A persistent, enthusiastic coordinator should be assigned to oversee the establishment of the communications system.

Automation Outlook: A Force Soon to Be Reckoned With - Development of the Japanese Software Market
Article Abstract:
The emphasis in the Japanese computer industry has been on hardware, while in the United States, it shifted to software several years ago. However, the lead that the United States enjoys in packaged software may be narrowed or even closed. Japanese companies are using United States software packages in their own businesses, rather than traditional custom designs. The Japanese government is allowing a forty per cent four-year tax deferment on Japanese-produced software packages. Japanese engineers are becoming entrepreneurs.

Automation Outlook: Steps Can Be Taken to Make the 'Portables' Acceptable for In-Flight Use
Article Abstract:
The Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics in Washington, DC, has been given the task of making a study and setting standards for the use of hand-held computers on airplanes. Users of portable computers can put some pressure on speeding the study by using airlines that do not restrain the use of the computers, by filing complaints, and following up on this action. The manufacture of lead liners in briefcases should be encouraged.
