Big-screen multimedia
Article Abstract:
Many considerations should go into selecting the right video color monitor for multimedia presentations. The proper monitor size can be estimated by using the following formula: every two inches diagonally across the monitor represents the ability to view the image one foot away from it. Therefore, a 30-in monitor is needed for a 15-ft room. A minimum resolution of 1,024 by 768 is recommended. The picture in the monitor should be bright, and the refresh rate should be fast to reduce flicker. Square-screen monitors are preferable because they reduce glare and distortion at the edges. The remote control that comes with the monitor should be able to adjust picture characteristics, such as vertical linearity, white balance, size, geometry and position, in addition to brightness and contrast. Road worthiness is important if the monitor has to be transported to different locations for presentations. A buyer's guide compares features and prices of 14 monitors measuring 27 in or larger.

When 3-D talks, multimedia consumers listen
Article Abstract:
Three-dimensional audio technology creates an illusion of a three-dimensional sound field from a single pair of stereo speakers. This technology is starting to appear in the consumer market. Many vendors of PC sound cards are starting to experiment with this technology. Products may be in software form, an IC chip or a stand-alone box. Most of the products are based on technology from either SRS, Spatializer or QSound. Spatializer and QSound technology is used in recordings and playback devices, and SRS is available as a playback enhancer only. Three-dimensional stereo is based on psycho-acoustics, the study of how sound is perceived by the human ear. Humans perceive sounds differently when they originate from different locations. Three-dimensional stereo technology reproduces these spatial cues through complex algorithms. A directory of available products is included.

3-D: a whole new look in multimedia
Article Abstract:
The most major breakthrough in film during this decade is high-quality 3D animation. This had provided dazzling special effects for many Hollywood movies. The power required to create these types of effects may be beyond the reach of many developers, but costs are dropping on UNIX workstations, and many new 3-D modeling and rendering tools are becoming available for the Power Mac and Pentium PC. Less expensive 3-D technology is also being incorporated into PC-based multimedia. Use of 3-D animation in PC-based multimedia games is growing. In order to play back true 3-D animation on a PC system without a 3-D accelerator, however, users will be limited to 320x200 displays and 256 colors, and a low frame rate. The hardware accelerator card will significantly enhance the display.
