Sceptre Technologies' $3,349 Sceptre S4500 portable computer and Psion's Series 5 of handheld computers are now available. The 7.6-pound Sceptre includes a 12.1-inch TFT display that delivers 65,536 colors at 800x600 resolution. Other components include the 150MHz or 166MHz versions of Intel's P55C MMX Pentium processor, 16MB of RAM, which can be expanded to 80 MB, and a 1.44 floppy disk drive. A $3,349 Sceptre S4500 offers a 166MHz processor, 40MB RAM, 12x CD-ROM and 2.1 GB hard disk. Psion's 32-bit Series 5 consists of two models, the $599 4MB and $699 8MB. Both handheld computers offer a Windows-style interface and office software applications. The Series 5 can coordinate files and data with a PC by connecting to the desktop. Communication with office and home computer systems takes place via Microsoft Explorer. A built-in converter library allows Psion's enhanced PC-connectivity software to operate with Microsoft Office, Lotus SmartSuite and Corel Office/Word Perfect suite.

Micro Express's NP1266 Pentium-based notebook comes with many impressive features and first-rate customer support. A $2,799 configuration features a 166MHz Pentium processor, 24MB of expandable RAM, 1.3GB hard disk, PC Card slot, NiMH battery, six-speed CD-ROM drive, internal 1.44MB floppy drive, 28.8Kbps modem, 16-bit sound card with 2MB of VRAM, dual stereo speakers and Windows 95. The 12.1-in active-matrix screen displays clear, sharp colors. The NP1266 weights 7.9 lbs and measures 11.8 by 9.1 by 2.1 in. The 86 keys on the keyboard are slightly raised and a bit stiff at first. Ports on the N1266 include serial, parallel, external monitor, infrared, keyboard/mouse, MIDI, A/C adapter and docking station. Micro Express provides toll-free technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week as well as a two-year warranty on parts and labor.

Tatung Company of America's TNB-5500 is a solid-performing, moderately priced Pentium-based multimedia notebook computer. A $2,995 configuration features a 133MHz Pentium processor, 16MB of expandable RAM, 1.44GB hard drive, eight-speed CD-ROM drive, two NiMH batteries, 28.8Kbps fax modem, 12.1-in SVGA active-matrix display, Windows 95 and Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition. The glare-free screen displays vibrant colors at sharp resolutions as high as 1,024 by 768. set of utility programs. The audio quality on the CD-ROM drive is excellent. One of the NiMH batteries can be swapped for a floppy drive. The 88-key keyboard starts out stiff, but proves easy to use. The two-button touch pad is quite comfortable. TNB-5500 comes with customizable power management features.
