Buying New Equipment? There Are Other Options
Article Abstract:
There are advantages as well as disadvantages to purchasing or renting used computer equipment. Besides savings that may range from one to ninety per cent, other financial benefits derived from used equipment are tax credits, parts for out-of-date systems, and older, less expensive software. Purchasers, however, should carefully consider their own needs, the space available and maintenance contracts. The advantage of used software is that it has already demonstrated its effectiveness. There are two kinds of equipment leases: non-cancellable finance or capital leases and operational leases, which still belong to the company. However, there is some expectation that technological advances will make it more difficult for used computer companies to survive because relatively new equipment can be purchased at low prices from manufacturers and the older systems are bulkier and slower.

Come Fly With Me
Article Abstract:
The use of portable computers and terminals is growing. By 1988, the market may expand to twelve times its present size. A major problem with small computers is their reduced capabilities, which are from 2K bytes of RAM to 256K bytes of RAM for a suitcase-sized model. The advantages include data entry and calculations at any location, and smaller costs. The disadvantages include user training time, lack of printers, and poor software. Many manufacturers feel that the current problems with portable computers will be overcome, and there is also a feeling that compatibility with IBM is essential. There are several models on the market and users are advised to consider their needs, retailer, service and cost before making any purchases.

From the Sublime to the Subjective
Article Abstract:
Dawn Technology, Inc. has heavily invested in microcomputer technology for its product development and design business. They use Tech 3, a specially designed program that allows for testing of designs without rebuilding or retesting. Additional features of their system include interfacing hardware for communications as well as pre-editing of schematics. This expedites printed-circuit fabrication. The microcomputers are also used in the office for word processing and accounting, which saves in time and personnel.
