Computerization Aids Fuel System Production
Article Abstract:
Dawty Fuel Systems Limited is in the process of creating an automated office that will be integrated with a computerized engineering and manufacturing operation. Expansion of each system has forced them to chose between compartmentalization or integration within their data processing center. The basic criterion is whether a system can provide a clear benefit to the whole company. Other criteria like availability of software and hardware, compatibility, and a demonstrated improvement in operations must be considered before a decision can be made. This applies to subsystems like their Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing system, CAD- CAM, and even the purchase of new sales forecasting software and Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools. These decisions are made by a team comprised of user department members and the firm's computer specialists.

FMS - The Way Ahead for Batch Production
Article Abstract:
New manufacturing techniques in the machine tool industry have reduced the need to replicate movements of the object being manufactured. Monitoring these new machines requires computer assisted systems to inform the user when repairs need to be made and to monitor quality. The net result of this automated shop is a flexible manufacturing system (FMS). Robots and multiple machines perform the entire manufacturing task. Careful planning is required to make such systems cost effective, keeping careful track of what is needed now and in the future. Funding is available in the United Kingdom to encourage this type of automation. Pictures of automated shops are provided.
