In the promising telephone sales market, 1.7 million cordless telephones were sold last year. Advertising has played an important role in the market development. Poor quality can have a very negative impact, so high quality products are essential to success. The cordless phones seem to be dominating the sales. Answering machines, while gaining in sales, actually total less than four per cent of total market sales.

More and more, people are staying at home for entertainment. The increase in videocassette recorder (VCR) sales has been good for blank videotape retailers. The three problems plaguing these retailers are counterfeit and poor quality tapes as well as low cost tapes finding their way into the market.

Over the past year sales of the one-piece telephone have decreased, while the basic two-piece telephone sales have increased. This trend is seen by many to indicate consumer dissatisfaction with the cheaper one-piece phone and a shift towards more high quality, functional telephone equipment.
