Article Abstract:
An 'Office of the Year' Honorable Mention award for 1983 has been given to Bankers Mortgage Corp. of Florence, South Carolina. The company used suggestions of Carolina Power and Light to design its energy efficient building. These features include four-inch fiberglass wall insulation with styrofoam sheathing, zone-controlled heat pumps, and flexible Reloc ceiling light systems. The corporation, with twenty-five percent of its employees hired from the handicapped, also received the 1983 Governor's Energy Conservation Award. Area photographs are included.

Foote, Cone & Belding, winner of an Honorable Mention for 1983 'Offices of the Year', was the first to use undercarpet cabling. The flat cabling, which is as thick as a credit card and can be folded and rolled, required a special use permit. The layout of the company was designed into three main areas for traffic and security control. The creative teams occupy the inner area. The middle area contains studios and projection rooms. Close to the entrance are the mailrooms, conference rooms, and reception area. A photograph is included.

The systems and claims processing divisions of Pennsylvania Blue Shield's four-building site won a 1983 'Office of the Year' Honorable Mention. A Mosler Tele-lift system moves the 100,000 claims that are processed and the 20,000 pieces of mail received each day. A Johnson Control JC-80 building-management computer monitors security, plus the buildings' environment, including smoke detection, alarms, and sprinkler systems. Interior and exterior photographs are included.
