Article Abstract:
Although the office automation market expenditures will reach $270 billion in 1985, David Kearns, president of Xerox, feels that figure is not adequate. Kearns states that the emphasis should now be on getting the office worker into the automation mainstream. Of the group of Fortune 500 companies surveyed by the Omni Group, eighty-five per cent will have formal procedures for the selection and implementation of equipment by 1985. Two-fifths have some local area network (LANS) systems, and by 1985 three-quarters will have LANS. Kearns expects the industry to expand faster than its present rate.

Editorial: PCs Are Computers Too
Article Abstract:
Since personal computers (PCs) have entered business offices largely without the backing or support of management information or data processing departments, PC users are not generally aware of the need for backup procedures, environmental safeguards or user security. With the trend toward larger storage media for PCs, hard disks storing up to forty megabytes, the protection of information is of paramount importance. Tape storage is the primary backup now, though new technology is on the horizon.

Article Abstract:
There is a slow but steady movement for women and blacks to be accepted in management positions. Slow-changing attitudes are a major reason women may not see major advances in management positions until the turn of the century. Blacks in commercial banking have difficulty moving into senior management because networks that revolve around membership in private clubs and elite life-styles have been closed to them.
