Essential tools of the trade
Article Abstract:
Image capture and conversion utilities are essential tools for the multimedia developer. Blending graphics from different file formats is a common multimedia task, and any single project may include a wide variety of graphics and file formats. Most Macintosh and Windows PCs have some basic capture facilities, but for converting graphics on a regular basis, some third-party utilities will probably be necessary. A capture utility allows users to capture on-screen graphics by pressing a key sequence, or setting a countdown delay. Others automatically number captured screens, or freeze the screen and provide cross hairs for selecting a specific region of the screen for capture. Graphics data is saved as either vector or raster information. Vector graphics are stored as mathematical calculations, and bitmapped images are made up of individual dots and placement information. Converting between bitmap formats is easy, while vector-to-vector is more difficult.

Not just a 'me-too' gimmick
Article Abstract:
Web/CD-ROM hybrid products provide users with media-rich CD-ROMs as a front end that then connects users to the Internet for updates and access to an active online community. Most reference title companies are including Web connections in their new releases. ImaginOn's WorldCities 2000 disc series offers video tours of world cities and has included a Web connection to provide users with up-to-date information on stores and restaurants. Although the added value can be costly, ImaginOn leaders will not charge for the updating service because consumers are not yet willing to pay for Internet content beyond connection fees. ImaginOn is also working on hybrid development tools. Electronic Arts also publishes CD-ROMs, but is skeptical of the hybrid market. The company is still seeking a functional business model.

As the worlds turn
Article Abstract:
The VRML 2.0 standard, developed by the 35-member VRML Consortium, boasts strong support and this advocacy is convincing developers to design and market VRML modeling and authoring software. Despite this increasing activity, some developers complain the standard does not support multiple platforms, multiuser operation or advanced Java integration. Many companies, including Netscape, Microsoft, Silicon Graphics and some traditional 3D animation firms, are releasing browsers and application development software that offer various levels of VRML support. These products allow designers to build shapes, or avatars, and organic worlds that are not burdened by angular and boxy forms. Software boasting VRML support also features a wide range of editing, detail and file support capabilities.
