Faster is better: high-speed modems

Individuals who access the Internet with a standard phone line and modem are unable to view some of the features, such as full-motion video, that can be seen with an ISDN line. However, the newer 28.8Kbps modems with 4:1 hardware compression significantly speed up the downloading process. Besides getting a fast modem, the user must also ensure that the modem that answers the call has similar capabilities, and that the phone line is free of noise. Most of the major online services are just starting to provide 28.8Kbps service. There are three types of modems, external, internal and PC Card models for laptops. A buyers guide for modems lists those best-suited for desktop machines. An external model has the advantage of working with both Macintoshes and PCs, and relieves the user from having to open up the computer. The internal model, however, overcomes limitations of the serial port and reduce the strain on the system.

Integrated services digital network (ISDN) terminal adapters allow users to connect to the Internet at speeds up to 128 Kbps using existing telephone wiring. ISDN adapters increase connection speeds by eliminating the analog phase of traditional telephone networks. Approximately 1 million ISDN lines in use in 1995 represent a 300% increase from the preceding year. ISDN networks were originally designed to integrate voice and data and can support several separate, simultaneous connections. Separate channels can be aggregated by adapters that support synchronous bonding. Multiple ISDN lines can be aggregated to achieve bandwidth on demand (BOND), often used for videoconferencing. An ISDN line requires different handling by carriers and by Internet service providers. ISDN access is not available in many rural locations, and pricing structures vary.

Interactive TV has languished since it was introduced about 20 years ago, but now, as the end of the century approaches, interactive TV is making a comeback. The Web is cited as a reason, and as bandwidth becomes more available and affordable, interactive will become increasingly viable and attractive.
