Gold mining
Article Abstract:
Many companies are investing in Web portals, technology that might be as short-lived as push technology. The reason behind this decision is that portals bring in customers. A research study has shown that most customers looking for financial Web sites, for example, access those sites through such portals as America Online, Quicken.com and Yahoo! To grow market share, it is important even for major e-commerce sites, such as Amazon.com, to link with major portals. Portal sites earn their money from advertising dollars from both traditional advertisers and secondary sites. Gartner Group forecasts that five major portals will emerge by 2000, namely Yahoo!, Disney-Infoseek, NBC-Snap, Netscape and perhaps Liberty Media. AOL will make a push to become a portal site for a general audience, although it currently serves a captive audience of subscribers. Microsoft is positioning its MSN as a catch-all, top-level portal for Expedia and Investor.com.

Rewriting the future
Article Abstract:
CD-rewritable (CD-RW) drives will be delivered by HP, Phillips, Ricoh, and Sony by the end of 1997. These products will feature the ability to write new rewritable media as well as CD-R discs. Although DVD is expected to be the dominant format once delays prompted by industry infighting are settled, CD-ROM will prevail for years to come. Prices of CD-RW drives, including software and adapter cards, are slated to start at $1,000. These prices are anticipated to drop by approximately $500 within one year, with a separate $25 charge for the media. Prices of DVD-R and DVD-RAM products, once they are finally released, are predicted to remain high for many years. Pioneer's initial DVD-R drive, for instance, which is slated for delivery in mid-1997, will be priced at around $11,000. Forecasts estimate that DVD-RAM sales will not dominate the market until the year 2000.

PC-TV convergence finally arrives
Article Abstract:
The move to digital TV is expected to help make the convergence of PCs and TVs a reality. Until now, consumers have shown little interest in interactive television. However, Microsoft just paid $425 million in Apr 1997 for WebTV. The firm plans to put Web information on TV and TV channels on PCs. In addition, Microsoft, Gateway and Compaq all are supporting the HD-0 standard for HDTV called Intercast, which places computer information in the vertical blinking interval (VBI) of a television that is analog. Microsoft's PC98 specification calls for TV tunining features to be built into PCs. Currently, PCs require an upgrade card to receive television signals. Broadcasters will benefit from digital TV because they will have the ability to utilize channels in any way they want to send channels. The key to Intercast's success will be providing compelling content.
