Hard Disks Receive New Attention As High-Capacity Storage Medium
Article Abstract:
Hard disks offer greater storage capacity but less interchangeability than floppy disks. The computer market is swinging back towards increased capacity. Maximum density for a fourteen-inch disk is 1.26Gbytes. The trend is to try to reduce the size to that of a floppy. A typical coating is 0.5 microns thick. New advances in coating technology will extend the density limits beyond the present 10Mbytes per square inch. The most popular hard disk is the Winchester, with a core of Mn-Zn ferrite. The task of reducing seek times is dependent on how light the moving parts can be made. Rotary positioning is used in smaller disks. Larger storage capacities depend on accurate drive positioning, which in turn has much to do with temperature control. A modified frequency modulation (MFM) mode has been used for fifteen years. Diagrams show disk device construction graphs show densities and measurements since 1955, and a table shows the encoding of data. Photographs show 5.25-inch disk drives.

Information Storage and Retrieval Supplemented by Digital Devices
Article Abstract:
Optical disk file systems are competing with micrographic systems for storing and retrieving information. The optical disk offers a higher density and lower costs. It uses the direct read after writing (DRAW) technology to provide flexibility, uses serial transfer for duplication, and provides immediate access to data. Several manufacturers are focusing upon the development of systems that integrate microfilm and digital data. Diagrams are used to illustrate digital and micrographic systems.

Low-Cost, Half-Height, CMI 5.25-Inch Winchesters Provide 6 and 12 MB Storage
Article Abstract:
The CM3000 series are half-height 5.25-inch Winchester drives. The CM3206 and 3212 models are designed for use with personal computers. These drives contain a single board that expedites assembly, improves reliability and reduces production cost. They are interchangeable with standard half-height 5.25-inch floppy disk drives.
