Technology Update: Optical Disk Drive Complements Existing Storage Systems
Article Abstract:
The Optimem 1000 from Shugart Corp. is an optical disk drive that employs a preformatted, twelve-inch, cartridge protected, removable disk. Optical disks, recorded by laser, allow as much as ten times the storage density of magnetic floppy disks and complement the expanding use of 16-bit and 32-bit microcomputers as well as the demand for the storage capacity needed for large databases, electronic files, backup, and archival storage. The Optimem 1000 can be integrated into a system by a controller that interfaces with the Small Computer system Interface, an industry standard.
