In Japan, trials test convenience, practicality of smart cards
Article Abstract:
Japan is implementing a number of tests designed to gauge the efficiency of smart cards, also called IC cards. The trials include the Smart Commerce Project in Kobe, Japan, that began in October 1997 and the Electronic Purse Service project that began in January 1998 and is being implemented at the Saitama Prefecture in Japan. Other tests that will be conducted include the Shibuya Smart Card Society project in Tokyo, Japan, that is set to begin in June 1998 and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.'s (NTT) electronic money project in Tokyo set for October 1998.

Chip makes Mondex cards more secure
Article Abstract:
Mondex International Limited has incorporated an IC chip that will enhance the security of its Mondex cards. The Mondex H8/3109, developed for Mondex by Hitachi, uses public key cryptography as opposed to private key cryptography, the system used by other smart cards, to make the electronic money system more secure. Mondex cards, which allows users to have up to five different currencies credited to a single card at the same time, also permits its users to make fund transfers to each other's cards via the Internet, traditional phones and mobile phones.

Multos, Java Card emerge as platforms for smart cards
Article Abstract:
Multos and Java Card are operating systems that are expected to become popular with the widespread use of multifunction smart cards. Multos, developed by the Maosco consortium, will enable the issuance of a card that can function as an electronic ticket, phone card, loyalty card, credit card, debit card and an electronic cash card. Java Card, a product of Sun Microsystems of the US, is capable of producing cards that are capable of interoperating with each other, other existing cards and card reading terminals.
