LCD panels and projectors
Article Abstract:
LCD projectors are becoming smaller and less expensive, and are starting to incorporate built-in light sources and speakers. LCD panels are also improving in resolution and response. An LCD panel is fairly light and thin, but require a separate overhead projector. The LCD projector contains its own light source, so no overhead projector is required. These have more multimedia features than LCD panels, and usually include speakers and multiple inputs and outputs. Polysilicone LCDs are smaller, and allow more light to pass through than thin-film transistor LCDs. LCD projectors typically weigh between 10 to 50 pounds. Heavier ones are also available that can achieve movie screen quality, although these are more costly, and better suited to permanent installations. Most LCD panel devices have a screen of between 8.4 and 10.4 inches diagonally. A good panel or projector will also provide on-screen adjustment, remote control and a hard shell carrying case.

Java takes hold
Article Abstract:
Since its introduction in 1995, Java, Sun Microsystem's object-oriented, platform- and processor-independent language, has emerged into a comprehensive tool for a wide range of software applications. A Forrester Research study estimates that Java object libraries will make up a $5 million market in 1997, the Java applet market will grow from $54 million in 1998 to $350 million in 1999, and clip applets will move from $33 million in 1997 to $260 million in 1999. Java applications include games such as those found in the Web page Gamelan, collaboration systems such as Earth Web Chat, publishing functions such as stock tickers and sports updates, and front ends to server technology to search large databases quickly. Companies are also developing products to enable users to build their own basic applications, such as FutureWave's CelAnimator which enables Web designers to create actual cel animation.

Search engines: keys to the Web kingdom
Article Abstract:
Some electronic publishing neophytes believe that electronic information is automatically searchable. However, most Web browsers only permit users to search for text strings on the current page. Web publishers can now use a number of text retrieval packages that provide powerful search capabilities over an entire site. These packages are attached to the server and CGI scripts are implemented to handle user input and server output. These programs generate indexes from files and include all words in each file. The search engine uses the index to locate files and they are converted to HTML on the fly. Searches can use Boolean logic and wild cards; results can be ranked for relevancy. Search servers using the Z39.50 search protocol can search all Z39.50 databases, others are limited to searching their own databases.
