Mom & pop.com: electronic commerce packages let you build storefronts on the Web
Article Abstract:
The latest electronic commerce software packages offer developers fairly affordable and rapid means of marketing products on the Internet. This buyers guide is limited to electronic commerce software costing $2,000 to $10,000 that are capable of creating and managing electronic storefronts and catalogs. The software includes a wide array of features to design and set up a storefront as fast as possible. All the programs provide templates to allow the developer to drop in existing product specifications and artwork. The templates for the various software are all HTML-based, allowing the linking of multimedia files to make the shopping experience more interesting. Most of the programs in the guide provide a means of creating storefronts through visual editing, through using point-and-click functions instead of writing scripts in CGI or HTML. Also, all of the commerce software have databases built-in, in order to put in changes to a catalog on the spot, while most packages are capable of dynamic database searches.

XRes masters high-resolution images
Article Abstract:
Macromedia's $699 xRes 2.0 is a paint software which combines many of the best features of Photoshop, Painter and Live Picture, but it does not have the maturity of these programs and hence is not a substitute for them. However, it gets high marks in performance and overall value because it provides an attractive integrated package for multimedia development. In many ways it behaves like Photoshop when launched, but edits are completed in seconds rather than in minutes as in Photoshop. Also, it uses considerably less RAM than Photoshop while allowing users to edit pixels, filter and create composites using objects and channels. In Direct mode, xRes is offers standard features, while in its xRes mode, it lets users handle very large files. Painting tools in xRes are not as responsive as Painter's brushes, and control over graphics tablets in xRes is more limited than in Photoshop or Painter.

Emblaze Creator; Web multimedia without plug-ins
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of Geo Interactive Media Group's $999 Emblaze Creator is present. The software is a set of proprietary compression technologies that lends to Web sites the feel of CD-ROM. The file format provides for real-time streaming animation, video and audio at the rate of 12fps to 24fps when using a standard connection of 28.8Kbps. Included for creating vector graphics are simple drawing tools. However, that ability is the extend of Emblaze Creator's creation capabilities. The Data Monitor is a useful tool, but the Timeline window only allows users to assemble frames in order, as each sequence frame is represented by number. This prohibits users from seeing at a glance where they are in a project. The software is considered to be overpriced, considering its poor documentation, lack of clip media and it weak creation tools.
