Office Security: Arming Security Guards with Handguns Should Be Viewed with Caution for a Number of Important Reasons
Article Abstract:
The issue of arming security guards with handguns should be analyzed carefully. A study published in early 1984 found less than twenty percent of the guards questioned used handguns on a regular basis. Reasons for caution given by the corporations include; the fear of an incident resulting in a lawsuit; fear of a handgun-related accident; the belief that carrying a handgun is not necessary on the job; and the presence of an armed guard may trigger a violent confrontation. Most of those questioned were from organizations in manufacturing, retailing, health care, and banking.
