Article Abstract:
Compatibility is probably the hardest concept to deal with in selecting personal computers (PCs). Hardware compatibility is not as hard to assess as software, although internal features such as board expansion can be tricky. IBM PC software cannot always be used even on other IBM computers. Computers not equipped with 8088 processors cannot use IBM PC programs; however, many popular programs have versions written for various computer brands. Those buyers who will be using one function primarily or who need vertical software should select the software first. For more diverse sophisticated functions, the IBM PC or compatible PCs is a good choice.

Article Abstract:
Low-end computer terminals cost less than personal computers (PC). If the computer user also needs the PC's capability, a PC connected to the computer system may be the proper choice. If the system has asynchronous transmission, the PC probably has the necessary RS-232 port, or one can be purchased for approximately $150. If the system is synchronous, the user must obtain a circuit board, called an emulator and costing $600 to $1100. If many users access the system for short periods, it may be advisable to use a protocol translator, costing $3,000 to $7,000 to connect the PC to the mainframe or minicomputer.
